Why Utah Boats Look Tired Fast

Four Things Eating Your Gelcoat Right Now

Hard water spotting

Utah's mineral content is among the worst anywhere. Splashes dry, calcium stays, and given a season it etches down into the gelcoat where washing can't reach it.

Oxidation & chalk

UV climbs roughly 10–12% per 1,000 meters of elevation. Jordanelle sits at 6,100 ft. Gelcoat goes flat and chalky here years faster than at sea level.

Waterline stains

Algae, mineral scum, and that brown band along the hull that no amount of soap touches. It needs an acid-safe process, not more scrubbing.

Road film

Your boat lives on a trailer. Every trip up Provo Canyon or out to Powell coats the bow in bug strike, sand, and highway grime.

What We Do

Three Levels, Depending on How Far Gone It Is

Detailing is priced by the foot, so you can work out your own boat before you call. If it's oxidized or etched, that's correction work — different job, quoted in person.

Water spot removal is a separate add-on

The prices above don't include hard-water spot removal. If your hull has mineral spotting that needs cutting out, that's up to $10/ft on top depending on how badly it's etched — so up to $220 on a 22-footer.

We'd rather flag it here than surprise you on site. Send photos and we'll tell you before you book whether your boat needs it.

Priced by the foot, so you can work out your own boat before you call. Not sure whether you need light or heavy oxidation removal? Send us photos — we'll tell you honestly, and it's often less than people expect.

Make It Last

CCi Marine Ceramic Coating

A detail makes your boat look right today. Ceramic keeps it that way through the season and beyond. We use CCi — a high-end professional coating, not the consumer sprays you'll find on a shelf, applied properly over corrected gelcoat. It's the same coating we run on cars and RVs.

Which tells you something about Utah water, actually. The identical product holds two to three years on a car and 12–18 months on a boat left unmaintained. Nothing changed but the environment.

12–18 months left alone

That's the honest number on a Utah boat with no maintenance, whatever the bottle claims. An annual rejuvenation extends it well past that — see below.

Water stops sticking

Minerals and algae can't bond the way they do to bare gelcoat. On Utah water that's most of the day-to-day battle, and washing drops to minutes.

Correction comes first

Coating over oxidation seals it in. If the gelcoat needs cutting, we do that first — see the oxidation pricing above — then seal it.

Annual rejuvenation — how you make it last

Ceramic doesn't fail all at once. It wears down, and once it's gone the gelcoat is bare again. A rejuvenation service — decontamination wash plus a fresh topper over the existing coating — resets that, and it's the difference between getting a season and a half out of a coating versus several years.

We'll be straight with you though: even properly maintained, boat ceramics generally don't reach the lifespan the bottle advertises. Marine conditions are harder than the lab. Maintained, it lasts considerably longer than 12–18 months — but we're not going to promise five years and hope you forget.

We schedule rejuvenation when we apply the coating, and we come to you for it. Ask about rejuvenation pricing →

Ceramic or film?

Closer call than most people assume. CCi ceramic covers the entire exterior starting at $1,530 and holds 12–18 months unmaintained — considerably longer with an annual rejuvenation. Yacht Armor™ film runs 5–7 years and adds what no coating can do — it takes rock chips and heals its own scratches — but covers specific panels rather than the whole boat, starting at $900 for the transom.

Plenty of owners do both: film on the transom and bow where the impact happens, ceramic over everything else.

Questions

Boat Detailing FAQ

Can you get hard-water spots off?

Usually, yes. If the minerals are sitting on the surface, a proper decontamination pulls them off. If they've been there long enough to etch into the gelcoat, that's correction work — it takes machine polishing, sometimes wet sanding. We'll tell you honestly which one your boat needs when we look at it.

How much does boat detailing cost in Utah?

By the foot: $3.50/ft for a basic wash ($75 minimum), $17/ft for wash and wax, $22/ft for a full detail including interior and trailer. On a 22-footer that's $77, $374, and $484. Oxidation removal is $30/ft light or $55/ft heavy. Full pricing by length →

Do you do aluminum fishing boats?

Yes. Lund, Duckworth, Alumaweld, Smoker Craft — painted aluminum takes a different process than gelcoat, but it cleans up well and we do plenty of them.

How often should I detail my boat?

In Utah, once at the start of the season and once before winter storage covers most boats. The pre-storage one matters more than people think — anything left on the hull sits there for six months under a cover, and oxidation doesn't take the winter off.

Detail, ceramic, or film — what do I actually need?

A detail cleans and protects for a few months. Ceramic coating covers the full exterior for 12–18 months from $1,530 and makes washing dramatically easier. Yacht Armor film is physical protection on specific panels for 5–7 years, from $900. Most owners start with a detail, add ceramic, and put film on the transom when they're ready.

Do you come out to Heber and Midway?

Constantly — it's some of our busiest territory. Heber City and Midway sit right between Jordanelle and Deer Creek, so that's where a lot of Utah's boats actually live. We're up there regularly for detailing and ceramic coating, and we'll come to your driveway or your storage unit.

Where else do you travel?

Wasatch County — Heber, Midway, Charleston, Park City. Plus all of Wasatch, Summit, Salt Lake, and Utah Counties: Lehi, Riverton, Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Sandy, Alpine, and Bluffdale. We regularly service boats headed to Jordanelle, Deer Creek, Utah Lake, Bear Lake, Pineview, and Powell.
